Profile

IU is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actress, born Lee Ji-eun on May 16, 1993. She debuted in 2008 and gradually developed a musical identity that connects clear, expressive vocals with personal storytelling. Her career spans bright pop, reflective ballads and reinterpretations of Korean classics.

“Good Day” became an early signature song, introducing many listeners to the contrast between her light vocal tone and powerful climactic delivery. Later songs show how broadly her sound has developed: “Through the Night” offers a quiet, intimate ballad, “BBIBBI” uses playful pop to draw personal boundaries, and “Blueming” brings a lively, guitar-driven energy.

Songwriting is an important part of her artistic identity. Rather than relying on one fixed image, IU explores different perspectives on growing older, relationships and the distance between public life and private feelings. “Palette,” featuring G-DRAGON, presents a reflective self-portrait, while “eight,” produced with and featuring SUGA of BTS, pairs a bright musical surface with a more wistful mood.

Her 2021 releases “Celebrity” and “LILAC” provide accessible starting points for listeners interested in her pop work. The 2024 project The Winning brought another shift, with “Love wins all,” “Shopper” and “Holssi” showing different approaches to scale, rhythm and emotion. The official videos below allow those changes to be explored in release order.

IU also revisits earlier generations of Korean music through her A Flower Bookmark projects. In 2025, A Flower Bookmark 3 continued that approach with “Never Ending Story” and a collaboration with Balming Tiger on “A Beautiful Person.” The project connects familiar melodies with new arrangements, offering international listeners another route into Korea’s musical history.

Her audience extends well beyond South Korea. The 2024 HEREH world tour included concerts across Asia, Europe and the United States. Her live shows place familiar hits beside quieter songs, allowing vocal interpretation and audience participation to play a central role. NME’s Seoul concert review and its tour coverage offer further context in the reading section below.

Alongside music, IU works as an actress under her birth name, Lee Ji-eun. Her screen projects include My Mister, Hotel del Luna, the film Broker and the Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines. These roles show a separate side of her storytelling, built through character, dialogue and sustained dramatic performance.

Her music and acting have both received major recognition, including music awards for solo performance, songwriting and albums, as well as acting honors. Fans are known as UAENA. Her official YouTube channel also hosts IU’s Palette, where conversations and performances with guests make it possible to explore her collaborations beyond conventional music-video releases.
