Two of K-pop’s most internationally visible groups will not have music in contention at the 2027 Grammy Awards.
BTS had already announced that it would not submit music for consideration. Now JYP Entertainment has confirmed that Stray Kids also let the Grammy submission period close without entering any recordings.
The timing is striking, but the two decisions should not be treated as identical. BTS publicly connected its decision to concerns about dividing music by region or language. JYP, by contrast, has not said why Stray Kids did not submit. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe both decisions as the same protest.
Even so, the timing has made the Recording Academy’s new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category impossible to treat as a minor rule change. Its first year is beginning with two of K-pop’s biggest global groups outside the competition.
| Artist / Organization | What is confirmed | What is not confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| BTS | No 2027 Grammy submission; the group publicly objected to dividing music by region or language. | — |
| Stray Kids | JYP confirmed no music was submitted before the entry deadline. | JYP has not said the Asian Pop category caused the decision. |
| Recording Academy | Best Asian Pop Music Performance will remain for the 2027 Grammys. | How the category will affect Asian artists’ visibility in broader Grammy fields is not yet known. |
Stray Kids are out of the 2027 Grammy race
JYP Entertainment confirmed that Stray Kids did not submit music before the Grammy entry deadline. Without a formal submission, their eligible releases cannot move onto the nomination ballot for the 69th Grammy Awards.
That does not mean the group has rejected the Recording Academy itself. All eight members were invited to become Recording Academy voters this year, giving them a role in the Grammy voting process even though their own music is not competing.
This distinction matters. The group can participate in the institution as voting members while sitting out the awards race as artists.
Why the new Asian Pop category became controversial
The Recording Academy introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance for the 2027 Grammys to recognize pop music associated with Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop.
Supporters see a clear advantage: a dedicated category can create more space for Asian-language pop to receive Grammy recognition, especially in a system where competition in the general pop fields is extremely crowded.
Critics see a different risk. K-pop is no longer confined to a regional market. Its biggest acts tour stadiums, top U.S. charts, work with global labels and producers, and compete for the same listeners as mainstream pop stars. From that perspective, a regional label can feel less like recognition and more like a separate lane.
That is the heart of the debate: does a new category open a door, or does it quietly build a wall?
BTS made that concern explicit
BTS did not leave its reasoning vague. The group said it hoped its music could be heard and loved for what it is rather than being divided by region or language.
That statement changed the conversation because BTS has already spent years competing in the Grammys’ mainstream fields. For a group with that history, being directed toward a newly created regional category can raise a larger question about whether global success changes how an artist should be classified.
Stray Kids’ case is different. JYP has not said that the Asian Pop category caused the group’s decision, so any claim that Stray Kids joined a formal boycott would go beyond the public evidence.
Why the first-year nominee field now looks different
The absence of BTS and Stray Kids changes the shape of the inaugural Asian Pop category before nominations are even announced.
Both groups would have been among the most closely watched K-pop names in any discussion about the new award. Their absence gives other submitted acts more room to emerge and makes the first nominee list especially important.
The category’s first year will now be judged not only by who gets nominated, but also by who is missing.
The Recording Academy is not backing away
Despite the criticism, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has confirmed that the Asian Pop category will remain in place for the 2027 Grammys.
The Academy says it consulted members of the Asian music community and heard both opposition and strong support. Its position is that the category can create additional recognition rather than restrict artists to one part of the ballot.
That means the Academy’s immediate direction is clear: it intends to test the category in practice rather than withdraw it before its first ceremony.
The real test is whether Asian artists remain visible outside the category
The long-term success of Best Asian Pop Music Performance will not be decided by the existence of the category alone.
The more important question is what happens elsewhere on the Grammy ballot. If K-pop and other Asian artists continue to receive serious consideration in broader pop, dance, songwriting and general fields, the new award may function as an additional route to recognition.
If, however, the new category becomes the place where Asian acts are routinely concentrated while disappearing from mainstream fields, critics will have a stronger case that the category is becoming a boundary rather than a bridge.
Why language could become the next major issue
The controversy is also likely to shift toward language.
K-pop today is multilingual by design. A single group can release Korean-language title tracks, Japanese singles and fully English songs within the same period. That makes any category tied to Asian-language performance more complicated than a simple nationality-based label.
For labels, this could make Grammy submission strategy more deliberate. The choice may no longer be only which song has the strongest commercial or artistic case, but also which category best fits the recording and how that positioning affects the artist’s broader Grammy ambitions.
What direction could the Grammys take from here?
There are several realistic paths forward, and the first few years of the category will determine which one becomes more likely.
First, the Academy could keep the category largely unchanged if it attracts strong submissions and produces nominees that artists and fans view as credible.
Second, it could refine the eligibility language if disputes grow over what counts as “Asian pop,” particularly as more artists release multilingual music and collaborate across markets.
Third, pressure could build for the Academy to demonstrate more clearly that an Asian Pop category does not reduce access to broader Grammy fields. That may become the most important issue for artists who already see themselves as part of global pop rather than a separate regional scene.
These are not announced policy changes. They are the questions the Academy is now likely to face as the category moves from rulebook language to real nominations and voting.
The November nominations will tell us much more
Nominations for the 2027 Grammy Awards are scheduled to be announced on November 16, with the ceremony set for February 7, 2027.
That first nominee list will provide the clearest evidence yet of how the Recording Academy intends the category to function.
Which K-pop, J-pop and C-pop artists appear? Do Asian artists also show up in broader categories? Does the field look musically coherent, or does it feel too broad to represent several major Asian pop markets under one label?
Those questions will matter more than any early prediction about who might win.
What this moment says about K-pop’s global position
The biggest change may be the nature of the argument itself.
For years, K-pop fans asked when major Western institutions would recognize Korean artists. Now the debate has moved to a different stage: what kind of recognition is appropriate once those artists are already global stars?
BTS’s decision made that question explicit. Stray Kids’ absence makes the first year of the new category even more closely watched, even though JYP has not linked its decision to the controversy.
The 2027 Grammys therefore matter for more than trophies. They will offer an early answer to whether the Recording Academy can create a dedicated space for Asian pop without making that space feel like a limit.
