JENNIE Releases ‘Someone to Hold’ for Netflix’s ‘Steps,’ Earns HMMA Nomination

BLACKPINK’s JENNIE has released “Someone to Hold,” her first song recorded for an animated feature film. The ballad arrived on November 6 at 2 p.m. Korea Standard Time, ahead of the November 20 premiere of Netflix’s Steps. It has already earned a nomination at the 2026 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

The collaboration takes JENNIE beyond her usual solo releases. This time, her voice helps tell the story of two women learning to understand each other, with a song about the strength of a sisterly bond.

‘Someone to Hold’ gives JENNIE a new creative role

According to OA Entertainment, this is JENNIE’s first contribution to an animated feature soundtrack. “Someone to Hold” is a powerful ballad with touches of vintage and organic dance-pop, built around the bond between sisters.

Netflix says the song accompanies one of Steps‘ most emotional scenes. Rather than serving only as a promotional single, it becomes part of the film’s storytelling.

Speaking about the project, JENNIE said she enjoyed recording a song for an animated film and was drawn to the characters’ warmth and personalities. The soundtrack gives her another way to connect with listeners outside her work as a solo artist and BLACKPINK member.

Fans can find the single through the official Netflix Music listening page.

What is Netflix’s ‘Steps’ about?

Steps tells the Cinderella story from the stepsisters’ point of view. Lilith and Margot are no longer simply the villains of someone else’s fairy tale. When Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother’s wand, her decision sets off a crisis that threatens the kingdom.

Lilith eventually joins forces with Cinderella to put things right. Beneath the magical adventure is a story about feeling out of place and discovering common ground with someone you once saw as an enemy. That makes a song about connection a natural fit.

Alyce Tzue and John Ripa direct the film. Ali Wong voices Lilith, Stephanie Hsu plays Margot, and Amanda Seyfried voices Cinderella. Netflix has confirmed a November 20, 2026 streaming premiere.

An HMMA nomination before the movie premiere

“Someone to Hold” is nominated in the Song – Animated Film category at the 2026 Hollywood Music in Media Awards. The official HMMA list names Justin Tranter as a songwriter and JENNIE as the performer; music rights organization BMI also credits Julia Michaels and Jason Gill as songwriters.

The song received its nomination before the film’s release. It is one of five contenders in the category, alongside tracks from Toy Story 5, Forgotten Island, Wildwood and Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie. The nomination is confirmed; it does not mean the song has won.

More original music in the ‘Steps’ soundtrack

JENNIE is not the only musician participating. Netflix has announced music involving Rose Gray, EMEI and Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried performs “Smile and a Song” as Cinderella, Rose Gray is connected to that song and “Meet Me on the Dance Floor,” and EMEI contributes “Understudy.” Composer Kris Bowers supplies the film’s score.

Together, the songs and instrumental score move between the film’s playful fantasy sequences and its quieter scenes. JENNIE’s ballad is reserved for a moment when the relationship between the characters comes into focus.

A new audience for JENNIE’s voice

JENNIE has reached listeners around the world through BLACKPINK, her solo releases and collaborations. With Steps, she takes on a different challenge: delivering a song that belongs to the film’s characters as much as it belongs to her own catalog.
